Director of Operations

We seek a Director of Operations (DO) to execute the daily operations of our 20-member residential design firm. The DO is a senior-level role, and reports directly to the Principal/CEO.  They will help set company standards and work directly with the Director of Design, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, Design Associates, and the Controller to ensure that protocols, training, and quality of architectural documents and design services reflect TBL standards. The DO is also responsible for implementing the company's overall vision, by upholding the CEO's mission statement and working with all staff to make that vision a reality.

The DO will work closely with the Controller to ensure optimal staffing, compensation and benefit levels throughout the company, and that departments have sufficient resources and procedures for proper employee training.

Some duties include:

  • Implementing strategies set by the CEO
  • Overseeing the execution of the operating budget as approved by the CEO
  • Improve operating procedures to increase profits and efficiency
  • Refine and uphold policies for project management
  • Support PMs and their teams in effective staffing, distribution of projects, and scheduling of work
  • Serve as a liaison between the CEO and junior staff
  • Ensure that company policies are followed and quality of TBL work product is maintained
  • Conduct departmental meetings
  • Recruit the best talent available for the company
  • Refine and uphold policies for employee management
  • Conduct all Project Manager reviews and oversee all Design Associate reviews

Our future Director of Operations must be a licensed architect and will have: 

  • A 5-year architectural degree
  • Strong business and management background within the AEC industry
  • Extensive, demonstrable business & practical operations experience
  • Strategic financial and growth planning experience
  • Significant team-building and leadership experience within an architectural organization
  • Impeccable interpersonal skills
  • Clear, collaborative, and timely communications
  • Strong organizational, and critical-path thinking skills
  • Advanced Revit, CAD, Excel, and Word proficiency 
  • Strong familiarity with PC platforms
  • Set management & review experience
  • Eagerness to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty as needed

Additional (preferred) qualifications:

  • Experience in custom residential design
  • Familiarity with the IBC, CA Building Code, and general code compliance review
  • Familiarity with interior detailing and waterproofing
  • Knowledge of design & drawing set protocols
